Pregnancy can be harmful and even dangerous. According to the United Nation Population Fund, each year more than 100 million women die around the world during pregnancy and while giving birth. One of the causes of childbirth problems for both mother and baby is lack of good caring during pregnancy. Dr.Cheung Kam-lau, consultant pediatrician for the neonatal care unit of Prince Wales Hospital in Hongkong, says that “having no prenatal care can put pregnancies in danger.”
In developing countries many woman are trapped in a cycle of pregnancies, deliveries, and self-neglect, leaving them worn out and ill. Yes pregnancy can be harmful and even dangerous. Is there anything a mother can do to make her pregnancy safer?
Preparation to pregnancy safer

- Age matter, yes risk of death in pregnant girls under 16 is 60 percent greater than in those 20’s. Mother who very young are more prone to preeclampsia. This disorder characterized by high blood pressure after the 20th week of gestation along with the presence of edema and increased amount of protein in the urine which put the mother and baby in high risk.
- It’s important to husband and wives to discuss how many children to have in their family. Careful planning and consideration might allow time to elapse between the birth of one child and the next, resulting in relief for the woman.

- The Coalition for Positive Out-comes in Pregnancy state that, before becoming pregnancy a woman needs at least four months to recover from exposure to harmful substances and to build a good nutritional supply.
- Eat fruit and vegetables, especially with high in iron to prevent iron-deficiency anemia.

- Take the appropriate vitamins, but avoid medication unless specifically prescribed by a doctor who is aware of the pregnancy. Some vitamin supplements can also be harmful.

- Lifestyle issues such as drinking alcohol, smoking and substance must be stopped. It increase child risk of mental retardation, physical abnormalities and even behavioral disorder.

- In the prenatal phase, mothers are cautioned against the danger signs of pregnancy. That why it’s important to visit regularly to a doctor throughout the pregnancy lower the risk of maternal death. The mother should be prepared to provide health professional with all the information she can, including her medical history. Some of these are; strong abdominal pain, vomiting, blurring of vision, loss of liquid through the vagina, stomach pain, headache, vaginal bleeding, pain while urinating. The mother needs to inform her doctor immediately if she experience any of these danger sign.
· And also it’s important for a woman to stay calm and avoid stress triggers, because according to a study by the University of California, “stress can be passed on from mother to the baby.”
Remember a woman who take care of herself during pregnancy will be less prone to complications upon delivery.
